§ 10-1. DEFINITIONS.

  • As used in this chapter:

    Automobile for hire shall mean an automobile or other auto motor propelled vehicle used in the transportation of passengers for hire over the public streets of the City and not over a defined route or upon a fixed schedule and is hired only upon a time basis, excepting, however, that drive-yourself vehicles as herein defined, hearses and ambulances are not included within the phrase.

    Driver shall mean any person in charge of or operating any public motor vehicle, as herein defined either as agent, employee, or otherwise, under the direction of the owner, as herein defined.

    Drive-yourself vehicle shall mean an automobile or other auto motor propelled vehicle offered to the public for hire for the transportation of passengers over the public streets of the City and without a driver being supplied therewith.

    Motorbus shall mean an automobile or other auto motor propelled vehicle used in the transportation of passengers for hire over the public streets of the City and over a defined route and upon a fixed schedule, excepting motorbus continuations of street railway lines and/or a part of a street railway system, and motorbuses plying between the City of Alameda and other cities, or a part of such intercity system.

    Owner shall mean any person, firm or corporation shown as the registered owner on the ownership certificate of any public motor vehicle as herein defined.

    Public motor vehicle shall mean any taxicab, automobile for hire, drive-yourself vehicle, sight-seeing bus or motorbus, as herein defined.

    Sight-seeing bus shall mean an automobile or other auto-propelled vehicle used in the transportation of passengers for hire over the public streets of the City and adjacent highways, leading to scenic, historic, educational, architectural and other places of interest, in order that the passengers may view the same. Sight-seeing busses need not run over a defined route or upon a fixed schedule, but must have an established rate of fare which shall cover the entire trip.

    Taxicab shall mean an automobile or other auto motor propelled vehicle used in the transportation of passengers for hire over the public streets of the City and not over a defined route or upon a fixed schedule, and which is hired for a fixed charge or on a mileage or other basis, except a time basis, and, provided further, that drive-yourself vehicles as herein defined, hearses and ambulances are not included within this definition.
